- 1398 – ATHLONE CASTLE CONSTABLES
A constable was an appointed official who was usually in charge of the castle’s garrison, maintaining defences and protecting the castle’s lands. The earliest recorded constable at Athlone was in 1223. In 1398, the Dillon clan became the hereditary constables of Athlone Castle a position for which they were regularly challenged (sometimes successfully) by members of the O’Kelly clan.
