Taking inspiration from the gardens featured in castles, monasteries, and manor houses of the Middle Ages, Athlone Castle’s newest addition—‘Historical Garden at Athlone Castle’— was created earlier this year. This garden is a collection of herbs, flowers, and fruit bushes, all of which could be added to food. Some had medicinal use, and others were valued as a source of pigment in dyes for textiles and ink for manuscripts.
Through this temporary exhibition featuring artwork created by local children, visitors will discover the various ways each plant was used and some fun facts, folk beliefs, and recipes!
This exhibition will highlight the plant and insect species found and sustained in the Historical Herb and Pollinator Garden.
This exhibition at Athlone Castle is supported by the Heritage Council under the Irish Walled Towns Network 2024 Interpretation Fund.
Access to this exhibition is included with a regular admission fee.
